Google Maps Mash-up

May 13, 2008 by tylersevcik

I went to streetartlocator.com. It shows art in public from all over the world. All you have to do is click on a bookmark thing and is brings up a picture of the art. The bookmark is on the map according to where the art is located. To upload a picture all you have to do is register your email and click a button. It is really simple and easy to use.

Ask500people.com is a mash up because it is constantly being changed or altered. It also is because people from all over can add to something.

Online Photo Editing

May 9, 2008 by tylersevcik

I used Picnik, Photoshop Express, and Splashup. Their ranking was Photoshop Express (P.E.), Splashup, then Picnik. P.E. was the best because it wasn’t slow and it had useful tools. Splashup was second because it was really frustrating to use. Picnik was last because it was too slow and the tools didn’t work.

Company Being Discussed

Sarah Perez wrote a post on the nature of involvement with social media. It was very good and accurate. A lot has been said for the relationship between the involvement with social media and the amount of money you could potentially make. One must pick and choose which tools to use to actually get things done instead of just using it to socialize. People that are avid and experienced users of social media tools know what kind of a time-sink they can be. Andre Nantel currently conducting a test on Twitter wanted to see the number of things, but mostly how carefully folks selected which of their followers they’d follow back. He found that around 6,000 Twitter feeds with the account @RU4Real, starting with those listed on Twitterholics, and then the list of folks following those listed on Twitterholics. He found that Around 134 of the original people decided to follow him back. There was also 66 people who first followed him but left upon reading the description. The guy is also going to do his experiment again and close the account when he is done. This is important to technology  because social networking is becoming part of many peoples daily life.

Online Presentations

Google Docs Presentation

Zoho Presentation

I would rank these websites as follows: Zoho, Google Docs, then Thumbstacks. Zoho was the best because I thought it was the most similar to the original, offline powerpoint. It also had the most backgrounds from all the websites that I used. The toolbar was easy to use and not confusing at all. Google Docs was a very close second. It was almost as good as Zoho but it didn’t have as many backgrounds. Google Docs was also very similar to powerpoint. It was also very easy to upload pictures onto the pages. These two online programs were very good. Thumbstacks was terrible. It allowed me to paste the information into the page but I could not edit it any further. I also couldn’t put any images on it. Thumbstacks was so bad that i couldn’t even complete a presentation

Online Word Processing

Google Docs

Zoho Document

I sent the document from buzzword to your e-mail

My ranking for the online word processing applications was that Google docs was the best, then Zoho, and last was Buzzword. I found that the Google docs application was the best because it was the easiest to use and navigate through. The document was very easy to change back to its original form and I had no problems or difficulty doing this. It was also nice because it closely resembled the normal Word. Zoho was second because it there was a problem when I wanted to remake to table. Other than that it was pretty much the same as Google docs. Zoho was fairly easy to use. The navigation on the top was kind of confusing to use but once I got the hang of it, it was easy. Buzzword was the worst. It was hard to get the table to work. When I tried to do it, it was wrong and confusing to fix. The bullets didn’t work either. They only bulleted the first line and I had to fix the rest on my own. The only thing that I didn’t like about all of them was that they only had a few different fonts.

Chinese Hackers Take Down SportsNetwork

SportsNetwork

Chinese hackers hacked into the sportsnetwork website. Sportsnetwork has been under attack from hackers for about 24 hours. They posted things saying “Tibet was, is and will always be part of China” messages. The site was returned to normal but was hacked again and taken offline. There are engineers trying to put the website back online but some people fear that it will only make the hackers more angry.  The Chinese government might be sponsoring the hacks but it is not for sure. this is relevant to web design because these hackers might do it to other, bigger companies.
